Parenting After Domestic Violence

Target Audience
This is a skills training course for anyone working with mothers or fathers whose children have been impacted by domestic violence. The course is aimed at social workers, family centre workers, parenting workers and family therapists who already have a grounding in working with families where domestic violence is a concern.

Course Outline
The course involves a mix of theoretical and experiential learning. Learning aims include:

Background
  • Links between Domestic violence and direct child abuse
  • Domestic violence risk and vulnerability factors
  • Factors which especially indicate risk to children from domestic violence

Interventions with mothers on
(a) Vulnerability to domestic violence - Safety Planning
(b) Parenting – with specific issues around the impacts of domestic violence on the child and the parent-child relationship

Domestic violence impacts on children
  • Trauma effects on brain and cognitive development
  • Attachment styles
  • Trauma bonding
  • Social learning

Domestic violence and family dynamics
  • Understanding how domestic violence can affect family dynamics – both during and after the abusive relationship.Increasing children’s resilience

Interventions with parents
  • The stuff of parenting programmes
  • Work with the over-controlling parent
  • Parenting control log
  • Parenting from the inside out

Therapeutic parenting
  • Helping parents understand and respond to children’s communications
  • Parenting a traumatised child
  • Understanding children’s communication
